Tub and Shower handles should always be easy to operate. If the handle for your tub/shower faucet has become difficult to operate
- See if the threads are stripped on the stem of the cartridge and the inside of the handle. If any threads are stripped, please replace the part.
- If the threads are in good condition, the lock nut/base nut may be over-tightened.
To resolve the issue, remove the cartridge and lock nut/base nut. Reinstall the cartridge and lock nut/base nut without over-tightening. While being careful not to over-tighten, please make sure that the lock nut/base nut is tightened with enough pressure to seal the cartridge to the valve. Roughly 10-14 lbs of torque are required to install the lock nut/base nut.
If the problem has not been resolved, the cartridge may need to be replaced.
For Tub and Shower with Ball Valve Assembly
The adjusting ring may be over-tightened.
- Remove the handle and brass adaptor,
- Use the adjusting wrench tool to loosen the adjusting ring.
- Insert the wrench in two of the notches and rotate counterclockwise to loosen it.
If the handle turns 360 degrees, the pin inside the valve where the ball valve sits is broken. The pin is not a replaceable part; therefore, the complete shower unit will need to be replaced.
